Unraid is an operating system for network storage solutions and servers developed by Lime Technology. It enables the combination of different hard disks with different capacities and types into a single, coherent data storage with parity protection. Unraid is also characterized by the ability to host virtual machines and Docker containers, allowing users to run different applications and operating systems on the same physical server. With a user-friendly web-based interface, Unraid is particularly popular with home users. For example, unRaid offers an AppStore through which ready-made Docker can be easily installed.

How much RAM does unRaid need?

unRaid requires at least 4GB of RAM to work as a simple NAS (Networt Attached Storage). But if you want to use Docker and / or virtual machines you need more RAM. At least 16GB RAM should be planned for unRaid as a Docker host, with optional one or two VMs. If you want to run several “larger” VMs or game servers in Docker containers, you should plan for 32 or 64GB RAM.

In addition to the RAM, you also need a 64-bit capable processor with at least 1 GHz clock speed. This actually applies to all CPUs from Intel and AMD since 2005.

Is the unRaid server your first home server?
