Synology has released a new update for Active Backup for Business, which should please Linux users in particular. With this update, Linux kernel support has been significantly improved, making it possible to back up current Linux systems again without any problems. This is an important update for companies and IT administrators who rely on Linux-based server and desktop environments and need reliable backup solutions.

Improved Linux kernel support

One of the most important new features in this update is the adjustment of support for the Linux kernel. Previously, there were restrictions and compatibility problems when backing up Linux systems, especially with newer kernel versions. These problems meant that many users had to switch to alternative solutions to ensure the backup and recovery of their systems.

This limitation has been resolved with the latest update. Synology Active Backup for Business now supports a wider range of Linux kernel versions, including the latest ones used in many current Linux distributions. This makes backing up Linux servers and desktops much easier and more reliable.

Newly supported Linux kernels:

  • Added support for Linux kernel versions up to 6.8 and the following physical server distributions:
  • RHEL: 8.7, 8.8, 8.9, 8.10, 9, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4
  • Ubuntu: 24.04
  • Fedora: 38, 39, 40
  • Debian: 12

Further innovations and improvements

In addition to the extended Linux kernel support, the update for Active Backup for Business also contains various other improvements and bug fixes:

  • Extended support for Hyper-V and VMware: compatibility and performance when backing up virtual machines in Hyper-V and VMware environments have been optimized.
  • Improved user interface: Adjustments and optimizations to the user interface make the management of backups even more intuitive and efficient.
  • Optimized storage management: Storage management and cleanup of old backup versions have been improved to make more efficient use of storage.
  • Bug fixes: Various minor bugs and issues that occurred in previous versions have been fixed to further increase the stability and reliability of the software.
