The Domain Name System is one of the most important components of the Internet. Computers use DNS to resolve domains (e.g. CyberTalk.io) to the corresponding IP address. DNS therefore determines the (IP) address behind a name.

Even though we can access the internet under domains such as www.CyberTalk.io, the internet is structured differently for computers. Each computer is assigned an IP address. For example, an IP looks like this: 192.168.178.125

However, as we humans are very bad at remembering such strings of numbers, we simply enter the domain. If the computer at home doesn’t know the IP address behind the domain, it asks the DNS server.

These look for the appropriate IP from their directory and pass it on. By default, the DNS servers are provided by the Internet provider, e.g. Telekom or Vodafone.

However, if you don’t want them to log your Internet activities (with writing), if they simply fail often or are too slow, you can change the DNS servers. To do this, you must log into the Web UI of your own router and enter the new addresses.

Google

Google’s DNS servers are among the best known, they respond quickly and reliably. Nevertheless, the data protection aspect should be taken into account. Google has even more insight than it already does. It is generally recommended to switch to a less data-hungry DNS resolver.

Cloudflare

Like Google, Cloudflare offers services on the Internet. According to its own information, no data is logged. As with Google, the servers are distributed worldwide and the fastest connection is always used.

digitalcourage

Digitalcourage – FoeBuD until it was renamed in November 2012 – is an association founded in 1987 for people interested in technology and social policy and based in Bielefeld, which is primarily committed to unhindered communication and data protection. The server is located in an external data center in Germany and does not log normal user requests. However, incorrect requests are logged, which in most cases are made by attackers or broken software.

Quad9

Quad9 is a public DNS resolver network operated by a non-profit organization consisting of IBM, Packet Clearing House, Global Cyber Alliance and other companies. The main differentiator from other DNS resolvers is the automatic blocking of domains associated with malicious attacks.

CleanBrowsing

There are three different DNS servers with different filters. The family filter blocks access to adult content, proxies and VPNs, phishing and malicious domains. It enforces safe searches on Google, Bing and YouTube. The Adult Filter is less restrictive than the Family Filter and only blocks access to adult content and malicious/phishing domains. The security filter blocks access to malicious and phishing domains.
